Artsy Textures and Transparencies

June 18, 2016

I love texture! You probably know that.. I say it enough!

This week I spent my design time creating 51 new textures.  Once I created the textures, I scanned them into Photoshop, changed them to Grayscale, and saved them as JPGs to serve as overlays / textures.

Because JPGs can produce different results than transparencies (PNG format) do,  I decided to also pull the texture from the JPGs and offer them as transparent PNG files, for ever greater versatility.

Let’s take a look at the difference between the two formats.

The new Artsy textures range between a heavy artsy influence, and one of a more subtle type. I have chosen a subtle texture for this demonstration.  The JPG examples are on the left, with the sister transparency is on the right. In Photoshop, the texture and/or transparency is placed on a layer above this solid paper:

You can see how the various blend modes affect the final look of the paper. Sometimes the JPG works best with your background paper, and sometimes the transparency is preferred. These are just a few examples showing the differences you can get with the same blend mode, using the same texture and same background.  This is why I like to have both JPGs and Transparencies available for my use.  More versatility and options!

Artsy TExtures by SnickerdoodleDesignsLook at this beautiful layout by Kay, using an Artsy Texture from Volume 6 and the kit, Choose Joy. (Edit: 2020; Choose Joy is now retired). Here is how she describes her technique:

“I added Arty Texture Vol 6 – 2 using the Vivid Light Overlay to the paper on the right side of the LO. The paper on the left side is the same paper without the texture added. Great way to add dimension while keeping the same colors in the layout.”

And here’s one from Kythe, using an Artsy Transparency Vol 7, and papers/elements from Deck the Halls and Color Outside the Lines.

Texture adds so much interest to our pages!

Here is a look at the new Artsy Textures:

The sister Transparencies look the same, so I won’t post their images here – however, as you can see, they react quite differently to the JPGs.
