Kids say the Darndest Things….

Who remembers Art Linkletter’s television show, “Kids say the Darndest Things?”    It’s true! Kids DO say the darndest things!  I know we all have stories about the cutest things our kids or grandkids have said.  There have been so many times when I have wanted to share some of the things that my 3 1/2 year old grandson, Owen, has said, but another thing that is true is that no one else thinks our grandkids are as cute or as funny as we think they are…. so I’ve hesitated.

But today I can’t resist. Monday and Tuesday of this week, I took care of Ella (19 months) and Owen all day and evening.  It was entertaining to hear the things Owen had to say. I’ll share just a few:

First:

  • Owen to Mommy:  (holding up one finger as if to make a point)  SHHHHHH!!!!!
  • Mommy:  Owen, did you just shush me?
  • Owen: Yes, I can’t hear the video that Grandma made for me.
  • Mommy: Owen, you don’t shush Mommy.
  • Owen: (after a few minutes hesitation) Okay, then will you please use your Quiet Voice?

Next:

I took the kids to PetSmart to look at the puppies. (Just trying to find fun things to occupy our time!) As I was pulling out of the parking lot, a car was coming to my right. If I had been by myself, I could and would have safely pulled out ahead of him.  But with my precious cargo in the car, I was being extra careful, so just decided to wait until the car passed.  The car behind us honked at me, but I waited until the other car had passed by.

  • Owen: Grandma, why did that car honk?
  • Me: He wanted me to go.
  • Owen: But you did go.
  • Me: Yes, but I didn’t go fast enough for him.
  • Owen: Well, that’s silly. We would have gone fast if we were on a RACE TRACK.

(True. I think that comment came from the fact that we had been playing with his cars and race track earlier that day; but somehow I felt he was defending my actions – and even though he’s just 3 1/2, it felt good!)

But my favorite:

Owen was on the floor playing with his cars, and I was laying on the floor next to him.  My friend Diane had created a JibJab movie for Owen in which Owen took on the character of multiple cartoon characters and we were talking about each character: Spider Man, the Hulk, etc.

  • Me: I don’t know all of the characters in that movie.
  • Owen: I do!
  • Me: Well… do you know Casper the Friendly Ghost?
  • Owen:  No, but I’d like to meet him someday.

So I quickly grabbed my laptop and went to You-Tube. I introduced Owen to Casper the Friendly Ghost.  And he liked him.

Do you have funny stories or comments from your kids or grandkids that you are holding onto? Please share!  We all need to laugh, no matter whether it’s our own child/grandchild or not.

Yes, kids do say the darndest things!! & often it’s how they say them that makes it even cuter!! I just wish I could remember the things they say … even just after, I can’t quite remember the exact words they use … 🙂 Thanks for sharing your cute stories!!

  3. Owen is precious! Kids DO say the darnedest things. When Danny was little, he liked to “go poop” with me sitting on the tub holding his hand (I guess he was afraid he would fall in). Well, he went pee but his little penis was not pointing down and instead shot a stream of pee “up”. Danny look at me and said, “Just like a whale blowing water out of a blowhole”. I about died laughing!

Oh Karen…I laughed till I had tears at these awesome chats. I love my 4 year old granddaughter to death and she says the darnedest thing that keep me in stitches. She sleeps over a fair amount and one night we’d had a particularly fun time. She was a little wound up and
I said “ok, hope into bed” Madison hopes into bed, gives a little bounce as she does and says “ok, let’s party” LOL. Grandkids just make our life so worth getting old for 🙂
Thanks for sharing them with us!

Grandkids are awesome. We had dinner last weekend with our daughter and nd son-in-law and our granddaughters, Arianna who is 4 yrs and Maja whomis 5 months old. Arianna wanted to play a game on my phone. I have games for her on my iPad so I got my iPad for her to use. When she saw the iPad, her response was “Grandma, you brought your iPad, good job, I am so proud of you!”.

LOL! Oh, that is hysterical! The thing about this that makes is so precious is that you know that is what she is hearing from her parents, right? Great parenting!!! And so cute. Thanks for sharing!!

Love these! Don’t hesitate to share funny things your little ones say-we all need the laughing and we all relate. When mine say something funny, I try to get it on a layout, with or without photo right away, so I will remember and scrap it when I have time. Kids love to hear funny things they said when little. Grandkids love even more to hear what their parents said as children.

Thanks, Peggy. I am creating a book for Owen, which I will give his parents at the end of the year. It includes photos and “Owenisms” as we call them, of our visits, told from his point of view. I hope he will enjoy it one day when he is old enough to appreciate it!

That’s such a great idea, Karen! I made a small book with various pictures of my granddaughter and I on my visits to her home (they live thousands of miles from me, so the visits are extra-special). It includes some fun times and things she said. And I’m working on layouts of “family stories” from my own kids, which will preserve those memories. My grandkids love to hear the stories about their dad!

Wonderful!!!! And they will “hear” your voice thru the telling of these family stories too…. so a double treasure for them! Thanks for sharing!

These times are precious! Thanks for sharing your grandchildren’s stories. I have spent the last ten years with my grandchildren and wish I had written down some of our conversations. As the oldest are now ten years old they really are saying the ‘darndest’ things so I have started writing them down. Now at snack time they will ask me “Grandma are you going to write that down” Some of them are pretty funny! Wedding day stories LOL!!

My daughter-in-law recently accidentally ran over their pet outdoor cat while her and the two boys (age 3 and almost 5) were in the car. She cried and cried (even a week later when she told me.) My son came home from work that night and him and the two boys buried the cat. The next day the boys were outside with my son and the boys went running over to the cat’s grave. My son said, “Boys, come back here. What are you doing?” Evan, who is almost 5, said, “We are going to see if Jesus came to get Blackie!!”

Ahhh.. how sweet of Evan. It is good to know those were the boy’s thoughts. 🙂

As everyone has said, I wish I had written down some of the funny things both my grandkids have said, but that being said, I never seem to forget, my grandson Ben could never get “supermarket” right… whenever he came over he always wanted to know if we were going to shop at the “stupidmarket”… 🙂 Sometimes they are so full of wisdom!
