The Best Laid Plans

You’ve heard the phrase before, I’m sure: “The best-laid plans of mice and men, oft go astray.” – Adapted from Robert Burns.  That happened to me this week.

I fully intended to complete a D.I.Y. project this week, the update of a Hoosier that is in our kitchen. I even “said it out loud” to you last week to further commit to the project. (What Do You Think of Painting Antiques?

The project isn’t complete, although it’s not because I didn’t try. I’m about halfway through with it, but…… life happened.  Nothing bad, just things that I hadn’t planned for. Like having to go pick out a whole new tile combination for our bathroom renovation, because the first tiles I selected were suddenly unavailable. Same with the bathroom vanity. That doesn’t seem like a big deal, but when you have to drive 45 minutes to the tile store then 45 minutes back home – and of course have to stop for lunch because you’re in town and that means you can have something fun to eat rather than something from home which isn’t always so much fun, run a few errands while in town, and, oh yeah, actually look at tile after tile to decide upon a replacement.. it all adds up to a pretty full day.  (Yes, I know that is a run-on sentence, but I just couldn’t help myself.)  Two days, when you count having to repeat the procedure and choose a new vanity.

But all was not in vain. I got half of the project done and feel certain I can finish it this coming week. My question about whether or not you paint antiques drew a lot of responses and thought-provoking comments. The consensus among you is that it really just depends on what the piece is. If it is a family heirloom, no paint. If it is an antique you are keeping as an investment, no paint. If it is an antique or even just an older piece of furniture that you have no sentimental ties to, if you are not keeping it as an investment, and if it is not a family heirloom, then paint is okay.

Since I don’t have a completed project to share with you, as promised, I will share with you an uncompleted project. Just one of many right now.

This used to be our master bathroom.

This is what it looks like now. Although the tub was one of those big spa tubs, we NEVER used it. Well, we have used it twice in 5 years. So we had it removed, and a new window put in. We had the shower ripped out, as well as the vanity. We originally intended to enlarge the shower, but finally decided to keep it as it was and enjoy more floor space.

It’s fun to watch the progress ….. even Riley thinks so. Apparently, he checked out the newly laid cement in the shower when I wasn’t watching him.

Ohhh…. it all looks overwhelming to me. But I got a good giggle over the footprints!! Nothing like having a 4-footed inspector on the premises at all times!

I love the 4 legged inspector! Looking at your old master bath was so deja vue for me. We remodeled 2 years ago. We had the same oversized tub that we never used with the same 4″ square white tiles!

We thought because it was a “spa” tub, we might use it, but neither of us are “bath” people.. so no. And, gosh, it took forever to fill the thing up, right? 🙂 Glad to be moving on from this “decor”… but as you know, what a mess!

I agree! On all counts. And Riley’s supervisory pay is quite low, considering. 🙂

WOW – you sure do have your hands full! Seeing Riley’s footprints must have made it all worth while! That was sooo special! I’m glad you decided to paint your Hoosier! I can’t wait to see it! Don’t work to hard though. Get some relaxation too!

We had one of those tubs too. Great big thing, hard to clean and that is all that was ever done to or in it. We never used it. So, when I had hip surgery, my hubby took it out and put in a 36×60 shower for me. You should have made the shower bigger, it’s amazing.

  6. Aww…treasure those paw prints. One of my special treasures now are the paw prints my sweet cockers left in the driveway right after it was poured. That was 23 years ago, and I still miss those little fur babies.

Ahhh. Yes. I am sad these paw prints will be covered up with the shower pan. But you’ve given me the idea to do something else to immortalize Riley’s prints, so thank you!
