Socks or no Socks?
Socks were made to keep our feet warm in the cold and absorb moisture when our feet are hot. They were made to wear with shoes. They were first made centuries ago, and have quite a colorful history. I Googled it.
There is, and has been over the years, a trend not to wear socks with certain types of shoes. I’m not one to keep up on fashion trends, so some days wonder if the “fashion police” will be chasing after me when I leave the house. Like yesterday, when I put on a new pair of tennis shoes. I had to stop and think… “socks or no socks?”
A few weeks ago, when I was taking care of Owen (my almost 5-year-old grandson), I asked him to put his shoes on. He put on his Toms. I asked if he wanted to put on a pair of socks, and he replied, “Grandma, you don’t wear socks with Toms.” Oh. I didn’t know.
How could I be trusted to make a good fashion choice myself? I wish Owen had been there. I could have asked him what to do.
I decided one of the good things about being my age is that I don’t “have” to follow fashion trends. Personally, the fashion trend I follow is “comfort.” I can’t tell you the last time I wore a pair of high heels or nylons. I’m more likely to wear a nice pair of slacks than a dress. And I have more jeans than I do skirts.
I prefer to wear socks with shoes, so yesterday I decided… socks.
I was in town all day, running errands. I didn’t notice anyone staring at me, or any little kids pointing at me with disapproval. So I guess I did okay. I’ll have to ask Owen the next time I see him.
What about you? Are you a Socks or a No-Socks person?

I prefer socks most of the time. Even with shoes that many don’t wear socks (like Toms) I wear those little toe and heel covering socks so it looks like no socks but – yay – still socks!
I cannot imagine wearing shoes without socks, unless they are sandals!
Socks, always. I can’t stand the way my feet feel in shoes without socks. Of course sandals are the exception. 🙂
Me too. I think we’re the exception though. 🙂
I’m a socks girl too! When I looked at your new shoes and before I read your post, I thought they were some sort of shoe/sock combo. They look very cute & comfortable!
They do look like that, don’t they?
Def. socks. 😉 By the way I love your new shoes. What brand.
Thanks, Patricia. They are Skechers, SN 15371.
I would go barefoot all the time if I could! but since I can’t I would love to know what brand / name and where to get those tennis shoes . . . they look great and very comfortable
They ARE very comfy. They are Skechers, SN 15371. I hope you can get a pair.
I’m a socks girl myself and like the others here, I like the shoes Karen! I have a very hard time finding shoes, having short and very wide feet (no webbing, praise the Lord) so it is not easy finding comfortable shoes, but those look comfortable! I will have to go look for them.
I used to wear socks all the time and never go barefoot. I think my feet get too hot now. I have a hard time finding socks that are thin enough or knee highs that don’t fall down or cut off the circulation. So I started wearing no socks unless it’s cold. I’ve gotten quite used to it. I never liked the feel of no socks before and I go barefoot in the house all the time now. I use my two nieces as fashion consultants (I live in their built out lower level). They dress well and know what works…or doesn’t. One just went off to college, though. My sister is of the opinion that you can wear what you want. I, too, can’t tell where the shoe ends and sock begins. Maybe where the color changes? They’re cute!
Socks….always! But then, I live in ranch country and it isn’t really good to go without socks AND shoes or boots….
Yes, I imagine so!!! Good to hear from you, Traci!
