Smiles between the Milestones

It’s June, and the school year is wrapping up for my grandchildren. I’m always amazed by how much kids grow—physically, emotionally, and even in the way they answer questions.

On the last day of Pre-K, my youngest grandson was asked, “I love…” and he changed his answer from the first day of Pre-K, which was “cars,” to “Dad”—then quickly added, “that’s all.” (Fortunately, his mom thought that was hilarious!)

Moments like that made me reflect on the past year and all the little things that made me laugh. Here are a few of my favorites:

OWEN:

Owen is confident, precocious, and exceptionally inquisitive.

Story 1:

  • Owen: Hey, Dad, remind me to wear my tuxedo to school tomorrow.
  • Dad: Ok, why?
  • Owen: Well, my friend dared me to so I told him, BRO, I’m showin’ up lookin’ like a waiter tomorrow!

Story 2:

(Owen usually eats the school provided lunch but this day…)

Owen: Dad, can I bring my lunch today? Will you make me a salami sandwich?
Dad: Sure. What else do you want with it?
Owen: Just the sandwich.
Dad: You’ll probably be hungry if we don’t pack more lunch.
Owen: Dad, It’ll be enough. Do you know HOW MUCH FOOD I can trade that sandwich for? Salami sandwiches are a hot commodity!

ELLA:

Ella is our sweet girl, who loves animals, taking care of others, and is rather shy.

Story 1:

When you are totally adverse to wearing a dress, and when your school is having a dance with the theme “Enchanted Forest,” what do you do?

Ella: Dad, leopards live in the forest. Let’s go as leopards!

(On the way home: Ella:” I don’t care that all the other girls were dressed as fairies.”
And the great thing is……. she really didn’t.)

Story 2:

Dad: Ella, the Easter Bunny is over here. Do you want to have your picture taken with him?
Ella: No. I want my picture taken with the goats.

ASHER:

Asher is definitely a Daddy’s boy. He is creative, shows early signs of musical talent, and is at the age where is is learning to assert his independence.

Story 1:
Asher: Dad, want to hear my special song?
Dad: Sure
Asher:
I have to listen to my dad
Oh, yea, I have to listen to my dad
     BUT I DON’T WANT TO
OH, NO, I DON’T WANT TO
Story 2:
Asher: Daddy, When I was a baby, I ate a rock.
Owen: No, you didn’t, you ate dog food.
Asher: I ate dog food and I also ate a rock. Everyone makes mistakes. I promise I won’t eat Winter, Daddy.
Dad: Who’s winter?
Asher: My rock!
And the 3rd child deserve a 3rd story…
Story 3:
Asher: Me the boss!!
Dad: No, I’m the boss
Asher: No. You USED to be the boss. I THE BOSS NOW!!!
…. a few minutes later…
….from the backseat of the car…
Asher (to himself)  me boss, me boss, me boooosssss, me boss
(Dad to himself: We’re in trouble!)
There are countless stories that shape who we are as families. If we don’t write them down, they’ll fade – first into memories, then eventually be lost forever.
Thank you for letting me share a few of mine.
